The original “MacGyver” actor Richard Dean Anderson is always welcome to join the TV reboot starring Lucas Till in the title role.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Peter M. Lenkov revealed that the new CBS series has actually created a role for Anderson in the event the actor agrees to join the cast.

“He’s being very kind to us because he’s allowing us to step out of the gate on our own,” Lenkov said of the 66-year-old actor, who played Angus MacGyver in the original “MacGyver” series that aired for seven seasons from 1985 to 1992 on ABC. “Hopefully, after we get up and running, he’ll come and join us. That’s what I’m hoping.”

“We have a role [for him], and it’s a great role,” Lenkov added.  “It’s recurring and I’m hoping he says yes to it.”

Even though Lenkov is hoping that Anderson will soon agree to play the role they have created for him, it seems that the “Stargate SG-1” actor has already decided not to join the reboot.

In the updates section of his website, Anderson revealed last July that he has no plans to appear in the reboot.

“So many people have responded to the attempted ‘reboot’ of the MacGyver franchise, and a lot of people have asked me if I’m going to be in the new show, or am I going to produce it, or, yada,” he wrote at the time. “And all I can say is, I’m not considering being a part of a project that has overlooked the insanely LOYAL FANS of the original character and has proceeded without considering how and why they all became and STAYED loyal fans.”

At the end of his post, he revealed that he was asked to be part of the reboot, but he ultimately decided not to be involved in any capacity. “I have tried to recognize that there really is a balance to be found here. Hence, my loyalty to my fans,” he wrote.
